Tell us your business story to date...
The Oppo journey began in 2011 when my brother and I broke the world record for the longest unsupported kite buggy adventure on land. During the trip, we started living off foods growing along the Brazilian coastline. Deliciously indulgent, they were also incredibly nutritious. This sparked an idea... why can’t the most indulgent foods be healthy? What about ice cream?
Oppo took 25 months to develop. Industry professionals insisted that it just wasn’t possible. We disagreed. Oppo would taste delicious… and be healthy.
Oppo is made using fresh milk, virgin coconut oil and stevia leaf meaning that it contains 60% less sugar and calories than regular ice cream. Having won a prestigious Great Taste Award and secured an EU approved health claim, Oppo really has made it possible to indulge healthily.
You can choose from our three flavours – Salted Caramel with Lucuma, Mint Choc Swirl with Spirulina, and Madagascan Vanilla with Baobab – in over 1,300 stores throughout the UK including Waitrose, Co-op, Whole Foods, Holland & Barrett, Budgens and Ocado.
Can you share your 3 bits of advice for fellow entrepreneurs or anyone starting their own business?
Product is everything. Customer needs are at the core of any product or service you create – if it doesn’t serve the market there’s little chance of success and growth.
You’re small – great! Remember who you are, and act like David rather than Goliath. Don’t conform to the norm, but excite and surprise. If you’re a David, embrace David. Don’t try to emulate Goliath.
Charlie did a TED talk titled “Why inexperience is your friend – the power of intelligent naivety”. Thinking differently is your advantage over corporate giants and if you don’t know the rules it’s much easier to break them. You can view the talk at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfRz1ShOspY
How will your business change the world?
We started Oppo because we believe that you shouldn’t have to compromise your health when you want to indulge. The most indulgent foods can and should be healthy, and being healthy doesn't mean less indulgent.
We've started with the most indulgent food of all: delicious, decadent, ice cream and have made it healthy.
We want Oppo to be synonymous with healthy indulgence and ice cream is just the first step.
What has been the most challenging startup experience to-date? What did you learn?
There have been many… but by far the biggest challenge was doing something that hadn’t been done before. For industry professionals, a healthy and indulgent ice cream just wasn’t possible. They had tried and insisted that there would have to be a compromise. However, sometimes not knowing the rules makes it easier to break them.
That’s what we did and we’ve now got a Great Taste award winning ice cream, which can also legally be referred to as healthy. So go on, break the rules, just be prepared to learn from the many failures you’ll have along the way.
Is there anything you can offer to help other startup businesses?
We really hope to inspire. It was by no means easy getting to this point and Oppo took over two years to create. When you’re innovating you have to expect multiple problems along the way - if it was easy, you wouldn’t be the first to do it. However, the trick is remaining positive and learning from each problem. Stay true to that and you’ll get there in the end. If we did, you can too.
Is there any help that are you looking for?
We’re always happy to collaborate with like-minded brands whom are introducing consumers to the healthy side of indulgence - especially on social media or at events. Please get in touch.
